In continuation of my Confidenti al Despatch of the 7th. August, I have the honour to confirm my telegram of the 2739 8th. August which was as follows:

For your information: the political position in Canton is

still in a state of flux. The Governor Generalship has

been resigned by the Commandant who held it and he is

followed by another Military Officer. This officer is

disloyal to Yuan and hostile to Lung who has not yet

moved forward. There is danger of rioting in Canton, some

conflicts between rival sections of the troops have taken

place. Shamien has been strengthened by 200 more Punjabi

soldiers.

2. General Su, the officer commanding the 2nd.

division of the troops, was elected Acting Tu Tu by the Provisional

Assembly but after 48 hours he vacated the post and Brigadier Chang

Wo-chuan commanding the 5th. Brigade of Artillery got himself

elected Tutu on the 7th. August. The mutiny against the Governor-

-General Chan Kwing-ming to which I alluded in my cypher telegram

of the 5th. instant and my Confidential Despatch of the following day was engineered by Huang Shih-lung, acting in the interest of President Yuan. Huang himself spent some days in this Colony and reached Canton on the 9th. August and assumed the office of Commander-in-Chief with a view to arranging the peaceful
